Before last semester the only interaction I had had with Americans was the school music teacher..one who sent students out the room to buy him coke and a packet of 'chips'. When I moved into the Parklands their full-blown charisma hit me like a bombshell...last semester was an introduction..this semester I feel like I'm swimming against an enormously strong American tide. I had never interacted with so many Americans in my entire life. They amaze me..how do they all talk at once yet follow each others line of thought? Why are they always so happy? Its not normal. Seriously.
So here, I am going to use two very lucky Americans as examples.
Last semester there was one very unforgettable lady..The Girl Upstairs:
'Hey Hey Heeeyy. How ya doin' Girlie?' An American voice floats down from the highest balcony. The same voice that claims 'You know what? I'm gonna climb that balcony' Kim, no, you're not spiderman. 'Nahh, its easy. I'll show you, it's easy.' No Kim, you're drunk, you'll die. 'Nahhh, its easy!'
Kim, one of the girls upstairs, one of the friendliest, craziest and honest American girls I have ever met. One night, sometime after 12.00am, I hear a 'WHEEEE' coming from the carpark. Looking out I catch Kim, riding a scooter, in the dark, screaming. I won't repeat the next acts which thankfully I did not witness..but the fact is; she is crazy. Another example; having lost her key and phone she decides she will ascend to her flat via climbing the balcony. She lived on the top floor. After much persuasion we finally got her into bed (a mattress on the 'lounge room' floor)... whilst watch Insidious (that creepy demon movie) in the dark on her own.
This girl was also responsible for my very near heart attack. One evening I was happily cooking in the kitchen when suddenly I hear a hiss coming from behind me. I slowly turn around. Right behind me is a girl with a death-white face, long long straight black hair, wearing what looks like a green hospital nightshirt. I screamed. Two seconds later the girl from The Ring begins to laugh, but not in the malicious 'I'm going to kill you' way. At that moment I looked properly and realised that it was, in fact, Kim..all kitted out for halloween.
Another exceptional character and close friend from last semester often began the convo with: 'Ello Mary Poppins' and finished with: 'Chip chip cheerio' ... Guess who? Yep, it is Joey. Forever picking up my broken phone at U-Bar on Thursday nights or sleeping behind random buildings Joey is one of the nicest, friendliest people everrrrr. I MISS YOU SOOO MUCH!
So, Kimberly Lewis and Joey Morris..you may be a crazy Americans..but it would do us Englishmen a world of good to take a leaf out your book, enjoy life and live for the moment.
